William Morris, 1786-1858 was crucial to the founding of Queen's University in Kingston which he saw as an assertion of equality for Scots/Presbyterians balancing the founding of the Anglican King's College (U of T) in Toronto. He also helped to establish the Perth Military Settlement, becoming its largest merchant and landowner, and later represented it in Parliament. An 1812 veteran and post-war militia officer, he was appointed to the legislative council in 1836 and named Receiver-General for the United Canadas in 1844
