Governor General’s Foot Guards Band Returns to Perth

The Governor General’s Foot Guards Band will be returning for the third year to St. Paul’s United Church in Perth on Sunday March 25 at 2:00 p.m.

The 30-piece concert band is part of the most senior reserve infantry regiment in Canada, dating back to its formation in 1872.  The band is based at Cartier Square Drill Hall in downtown Ottawa. They share a close connection to the Governor General and provide music for many ceremonies in the Ottawa area, including the annual nationally televised Remembrance Day ceremony held at the War Memorial.

The band’s full dress uniform with scarlet tunic and bearskin hat is immediately recognizable.  Many of the musicians in the ensemble play in the Ceremonial Guard band, which supports the changing of the guard ceremony on Parliament Hill during the summer months.

The program will take you back to the silver screen movie de Gadfly, with music written by Shostakovich (Spanish Dance), exciting lively scores from American composer and orchestrator for film Rossano Galante (The Last Centaur) up to the present with music from the family movie Moana that will for sure please the little ones.

Audience members will have the chance to hear dramatic and powerful music from Manuel Panella's Opera El Gato Montes - The Wildcat, touching music inspired from the North-Eastern Japan 2011 earth quake by Philip Sparke, The Sun Will Rise Again, Australian music by Percy Aldridge Grainger The Gum-Sukers March, rhythmical folk dance music by Etienne Crausaz, Balkan Dance as well as popular music by none other than English rock band Led Zeppelin.

Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door to defray the costs of advertising.

Prospective concertgoers are invited to warm up a late March Sunday afternoon with the exciting sounds of brass, woodwind and percussion, in the intimate and acoustically pleasant sanctuary of St. Paul’s United Church, 25 Gore Street West in Perth.
